A bit overdue, but here’s the news of the last week of September and the first week of October. In this edition we get to see slides from MM14NY, a Magento security update and eBay and PayPal parting hands.
Magento
- On the 3rd of October, Magento released a patch to resolve a Remote Code Execution Exploit which affects all versions currently shipped though apparently only if it’s ran on the CentOS or RHEL operating system. If you are uncertain whether your system is affected, Magento has outlined a vulnerability check.
- Lesti_Fpc 1.2.0 has been released and is now compatible with Magento 1.9.
- CreareSEO now has support for Google Sitelinks Search.
- Atwix explains how to override Magento observers of third parties without interfering with their code base.
- Magento CE 1.7 is according to builtwith its September analysis the Magento distribution mostly found in the wild (44%). Magento 1.9 comes last with a representation of only 5%. The data pool comes from a scan of the “Quantcast top 1M homepages” and does not include Magento Enterprise installations.
- Classy Llama outlines a few SQL queries which can be used with the Clean_SqlReports extension for custom data reports.
- Inchoo warns that an upgrade to EE 1.14 and CE 1.9 will crash the PayPal Express flow for projects that have a fallback to enterprise|defalt.
- Colin Mollenhour notes that Magento only has 1 million possible encryption keys; a random string of 4 characters would be more secure. He has submitted a pull request to Magento 2 to disclose the issue for the both the future and the 1.X branch.
- Zookal_HarrisStreetImpex is a new n98-magerun extension for importing and exporting Magento configuration data. More information on the magerun blog.
Magento 2
- 0.1.0-alpha97 was a big update with among other things major updates to new setup system, lots of improvements and to our pleasure a long list of community supplied issues addressed.
- Though officially not in the time span of this round-up but included due to relevance: we had a quick look at the new setup system previous week.
- In comparison, 0.1.0-alpha98 was a bit paler and focused primarily on bug fixes and functional tests.
- Alan Kent is very affirming in his blog post regarding the effectiveness of Magento 2 test automation. Good to see that the hard work is paying itself off.
- Inchoo demonstrated how to implement a custom payment gateway in Magento.
- The Magento 2 Developer Documentation is silently being worked on and currently in a transition phase. They are probably streamlining where Magento 2 documentation should be located. Also actively looking for feedback so chime in if you think you can help.

- Some (all?) of the MM14NY hackathon code can be found on Github. The MM14NY slideshare channel might also be of interest.
And the other half
- MageTitans, a developer-oriented conference, will take place on the 1st of November in Manchester.
- Forbes published an article which should help with picking an e-commerce platform for your online store. It inaccurately outlines Magento in a negative way and Phil Whinkle commented to shed light on the case.
- Joshua S. Warren opened the doors of MageUnity: a community oriented forum for Magento.
- Phil Winkle and Kalen Jordan are going strong with their MageTalk Magento podcast. Episode four and five have aired.
- eBay and PayPal will split into two different companies. Magento is a subsidiary of eBay Enterprise but there is no word on the impact of the split on that relationship. Some discussion from a community perspective on MageUnity. Alan Kent chimed in but naturally he can’t give away the juicy details.
That’s about it. If you master German, don’t forget to check out Matthias’ Zeis Magento-Neuigkeiten which our round-ups are based on. If we forgot your presentation, missed a module release or made a mistake, let us know on Twitter, in the comments below or send us an email. Until next time!
