Magento News for the weeks 31 and 32

Today we are covering the news of the weeks 31 and 32. Don’t forget that we are catching up. The news posted in this edition is, at the moment of writing, a month old.

Magento

• Nexcess shared its experience with the discovery of malicious Magento extensions and how to detect if a Magento installation has been affected. In related news, the MailPoet WordPress vulnerability might have affected thousands of Magento installations by proxy. If you didn’t check your security when this was hot off the press, it’s a good idea to do so now!
• MageSpec, a PHPSpec implementation for Magento, got updated to support Magento code pools and automatic module code generation.
• Vinai has refactored MageHack_Autogrid and states it is “pretty usable now“. It’s one of those extensions which can potentially save you a lot of time.
• DemacMedia released Demac_MultiLocationInventory for expanding Magento its default inventory functionality.
• Christian Münch started covering third-party n98-magerun modules on the Magerun blog. Up first is the “module-cache-benchmark” module.
• The IMI_EasyCacheRefresh extension adds a “Refresh invalidated” button to the Magento backend for quickly refreshing all outdated caches.
• Alan Storm started a series about how Magento handles errors which he coins “Magento’s Mini Error Framework“. In the first post he dives into the 404 and 503 page and how these are bound to that framework.

Magento 2

• On July the 25th, 2.0.0.0-dev88 got released. We recommend to check out the changelog if you are interested in the full change set.
• Version 89 was a bit different than the traditional long list of fixes and additions because they decided to change the way releases are versioned. dev89 became 0.1.0-alpha89.
• What’s also new is the addition of the magento-2-community-edition repository. This is done to separate the Magento 2 “project” and its “components”.
• Those components are now found in the Magento Composer Repository. Alan Kent covered how the pieces of the puzzle fit together.
• In additional writing, Alan covered how to create a new Magento 2 area and how to deploy a Magento 2 module via Composer.
• Marius Strajeru released a Magento 2 sample data export which is based on Magento 1 its sample data set.

Community

• Phil Winkle reviewed the “Magento Certified Solution Specialist Exam“.
• Sylvain Raye got interviewed by aheadWorks regarding Magento, Composer and Meet Magento CH.
• Good community moments from late July: a Twitter-Account for Phil Winkle’s hair, a website to check whether Marius “Magento SE” Strajeru is awake and an extension to have your favorite Magento SE users available from within the Magento backend.
• There was an interesting discussion about possibly inflated Magento developer salaries in the USA with a lot of community input.
• Inchoo published an opinion-piece or: advertorial on why you should look for certified Magento solution specialists for your next Magento project. They also posted an analysis of the state of certified Magento solution specialists as of July 2014.
